Notably, the General Motors facility at Talegaon is an assembly and powertrain production facility. The plant started operations in 2017, taking over from GM’s Halol plant in Gujarat. The Talegaon plant assembled models for Chevrolet India like the Chevrolet Beat, Spark, Sail Sedan, and SAIL Hatchback.
However, following General Motors exit from the Indian market, production at the Talegaon plant was seized in 2020. The seizure saw interest from several automotive manufacturers like Mahindra and China’s Great Wall Motors (GWM). In January 2020, GWM also came up with an agreement with General Motors to purchase the Talegaon plant, making way for the Chinese brand’s India entry. However, despite extensions, the agreement couldn’t be made through.
