PM Modi’s Green Tech Pitch At G7 Summit: 'AI Is Energy-Intensive, Needs Renewables To Sustain'

iting India’s "human-centric approach," PM Modi emphasised the need for technology to serve humanity at large, not just a privileged few.

PM Modi At G7 Summit: Speaking at the G7 Outreach Session in Kananaskis, Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi placed the spotlight on the dual challenges of rapid technological advancement and sustainable energy demands. While acknowledging the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI), PM Modi warned that the technology’s energy appetite must be addressed responsibly.

"AI, itself, is an energy-intensive technology. If there is any way to fulfil the energy requirements of a technology-driven society sustainably, it is through renewable energy," PM Modi stated, urging global leaders to prioritise clean energy sources as they embrace new technologies.

The Prime Minister also reflected on India's own journey of making technology accessible to its vast population. Citing India’s "human-centric approach," PM Modi emphasised the need for technology to serve humanity at large, not just a privileged few.

Deepfake Threat Needs Global Guardrails

Raising a red flag over AI’s darker capabilities, PM Modi highlighted the growing menace of deepfake content. He pressed for clear safeguards to ensure the credibility of AI-generated information. "Deepfake is a cause of great concern. Therefore, watermarking or clear declaration should be made on AI-generated content," he stressed.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) later elaborated that PM Modi called for stronger global governance frameworks to manage the risks associated with emerging technologies while fostering innovation responsibly.

'Nations Sponsoring Terror Must Pay The Price'

Shifting focus to global security, PM Modi delivered a blunt message on terrorism. Referring to the recent attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Modi called for holding terror sponsors accountable.

"For global peace and prosperity, our thought and policy must be clear - if any country supports terrorism, it will have to pay the price for it," he declared. Criticising the global double standards on sanctions, the Prime Minister added, "On one hand, we are quick to impose all kinds of sanctions based on our own preferences. On the other hand, countries that openly support terrorism are rewarded."

India Brings Global South's Voice To The Fore

PM Modi also reaffirmed India’s commitment to representing the Global South’s concerns on the world stage. Highlighting India’s development model, he said, "Moving forward on the fundamental principles of availability, accessibility, affordability, acceptability, India has chosen the path of inclusive development."

He positioned India as a bridge between advanced economies and developing nations, advocating for greater inclusivity in global decision-making forums.
