No Contacts Needed: LiveCaller Brings Free Caller ID To iPhones With iOS 18

The launch of LiveCaller follows Apple’s rollout of the Live Caller ID Lookup framework, introduced with the iOS 18.2 update in December 2024.

Apple users have a fresh new way to dodge spam and scam calls without paying a dime — and without giving up their contact list. A new app called LiveCaller has launched as a real-time caller ID solution built exclusively for iPhones running iOS 18.2 or later, positioning itself as a privacy-friendly alternative to services like Truecaller and Hiya.

Powered by Apple's Privacy-Centric Framework

The launch of LiveCaller follows Apple’s rollout of the Live Caller ID Lookup framework, introduced with the iOS 18.2 update in December 2024. This framework enables apps to identify unknown callers directly on the incoming call screen — without needing access to the user’s contacts or remaining active in the background.

LiveCaller taps into this capability and allows users to see who’s calling in real-time. “The company says that the service has access to over four billion phone numbers,” making it one of the largest caller ID databases available on iOS. Developed by Sync.ME, LiveCaller is now accessible in 28 languages and promises to keep spam, telemarketing, robocalls, and fraud attempts at bay.

No Sign-Up, No Contact Access, No Catch

What sets LiveCaller apart is its user-first privacy approach. Unlike some of its competitors, the app doesn’t request access to your address book or require account registration. Calls are processed using end-to-end encryption, and the developers assert that no data is stored or collected. “The company says that this process is protected by end-to-end encryption in order to protect user privacy, and call data is not collected.”

That means when someone receives a call on an iPhone running iOS 18.2 or newer, LiveCaller quickly checks the number, encrypts it, and then identifies it without compromising any personal data.

Fraud Protection at a Time It's Needed Most

Spam and scam calls remain a major issue in India and around the world. According to government figures, Indians lost over Rs 177 crore to financial fraud in 2024 — more than double the amount from 2023. Caller ID apps like LiveCaller are increasingly essential tools in the fight against such scams, helping users make informed decisions about who they answer.

LiveCaller is now available for free on the App Store. While it's unclear whether the company will eventually introduce a paid tier, for now, it offers iPhone users a cost-free, privacy-focused way to stay safe from unwanted calls — no strings attached.
