20 Arrested For Making 'Obscene Gestures, Derogatory Remarks' During Eid Procession In Gujarat: Police

Some participants in an Eid Milad un Nabi procession reportedly made obscene gestures and uttered derogatory remarks while passing by a temple in Padra, Gujarat

Twenty individuals have been arrested for allegedly offending religious sentiments during a procession marking the occasion of Eid Milad un Nabi in Padra, Gujarat, a senior police official informed on Saturday. The incident transpired on Friday night when some participants in the procession reportedly made obscene gestures and uttered derogatory remarks while passing by a temple.

Superintendent of Police (Vadodara Rural) Rohan Anand informed that in response to the incident, a group of Hindus assembled outside the Padra police station, demanding stringent action against those responsible for the offensive conduct, news agency PTI reported.

The situation was brought under control, and a formal complaint was registered based on the testimony of one Ajay Parmar.

An FIR (First Information Report) was filed against 13 identified individuals and several others who were part of the procession, the senior cop told PTI.

The charges include violations of various sections of the Indian Penal Code, such as Section 143 (pertaining to unlawful assembly), Section 153A (related to promoting enmity between different groups), Section 294B (involving obscene acts and songs), Section 298 (concerning uttering words with a deliberate intent to wound religious feelings), and Section 323 (voluntarily causing harm), as per PTI's report.

This comes after a stone-pelting attack took place on a religious procession organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Gujarat's Narmada district on Friday. At least twelve individuals, including two police officers, sustained injuries in the incident. Superintendent of Police, Prashant Sumbe, informed that as the Yatra passed the mosque, miscreants hurled stones at the procession, resulting in injuries to approximately 10 to 15 people, including a couple of police personnel.

In Manjusar village in Vadodara district, a separate incident unfolded on Friday when villagers were in the process of immersing Ganesh idols in a pond. According to police, an altercation transpired when the tractor carrying three idols reached Garasia mohalla, leading to a stone-pelting incident that resulted in injuries to three to four individuals, PTI reported.
