According to the Hindu calendar, this year, the grand festival of Chhath Puja will begin on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, and end on Friday, November 8. Preparations for this four-day festival begin in earnest after Diwali. On Nahay Khay, the time for worship is from 6:39 AM to 5:41 PM. Performing rituals during this period brings special benefits.

Nahay Khay

Nahay Khay is the first day of Chhath. On this day, women performing the Chhath rituals wake up early in the morning to bathe. After worshipping the deities, they partake in a satvik meal. The main dishes for Nahay Khay include rice, chickpea dal, pumpkin curry, and papad. In states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, potato bhaji is also enjoyed with papad and fritters on this day.

Satvik food purifies the mind, body, speech, and soul of the fasting women. They share this food as prasad with everyone. Rice, chickpea dal, and bottle gourd curry hold special significance on this day. After Diwali, cooking any dishes containing garlic and onions is avoided until the Chhath festival concludes, maintaining a distance from tamasic foods.

The Chhath festival is considered a grand occasion for Hindus as many specific practices are observed. Touching Chhath items with unclean hands is deemed inappropriate. Items used for the Chhath festival are prepared using separate utensils and cooking equipment in villages, ensuring they are completely pure and not used for any other purpose.
