OpenAI Inks Deal With Reddit To Bring Its Content To ChatGPT

Although OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's shareholder status on Reddit was revealed, it was clarified that the partnership was led by OpenAI’s COO and approved by its independent board.

OpenAI has inked a deal to access real-time content through Reddit’s data API, similar to Reddit's previous $60 million contract with Google. This partnership aims to empower Reddit to introduce new AI-driven functionalities for its users and moderators, leveraging OpenAI’s widely-used language models, the media has reported.

Additionally, OpenAI has pledged to become an advertising partner with Reddit. Users on Reddit have previously voiced worries about the platform's administration and alterations to its API pricing. The recent collaboration between OpenAI and Stack Overflow also encountered criticism, with users trying to delete their posts. Neither company has disclosed financial specifics nor referenced training data in their blog post announcement.

Although OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's shareholder status on Reddit was revealed, it was clarified that the partnership was led by OpenAI’s COO and approved by its independent board.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman praised the agreement, emphasising that integrating Reddit into ChatGPT reflects their commitment to an interconnected internet and assists users in discovering pertinent content. Nevertheless, Reddit has previously shown animosity towards firms utilizing its data for AI model training, including the threat of blocking Google web crawlers from site access. Allegedly, OpenAI also notified r/ChatGPT subreddit moderators of a copyright infringement for using the ChatGPT logo as a profile picture.

"Reddit has become one of the internet's largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up to date human conversations about anything and everything," Reddit chief executive Steve Huffman was quoted as saying in a joint release by news agency AFP.

"Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they're looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit," Huffman added.

Reddit operates through thousands of "subreddits" -- forums on a vast array of topics moderated by their creators.

The largest subreddits, such as r/funny, r/games, and r/music, boast tens of millions of subscribers.

Several Reddit practices have become social media staples, including AMAs (Ask Me Anything sessions), where users can ask an interviewee anything within a specified time frame.
