Netflix May Stream Celebrity Golf Tournament This Fall. Know Everything

Netflix's first golf streaming event is likely to premiere in the fall in Las Vegas.

Streaming giant Netflix is looking to foray into live sports and the company is preparing to stream an inaugural golf event, the media has reported. The professional streaming event that Netflix is looking to host could include professional golfers in a celebrity golf tournament, The Wall Street Journal has reported.

The report added that Netflix's first golf streaming event is likely to premiere in the fall in Las Vegas, citing people familiar with the development. The discussions about the golf tournament are in the preliminary stages as streaming such an event comes with significant challenges and high expenditure.

The maiden golf event would feature celebrities from two Netflix docuseries, “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing”, the WSJ report added.

While Netflix’s initial offering may generate limited interest among sports fans, it could pave the way for additional deals involving more prominent sports events that could in turn encourage fresh sign-ups to the streaming service. However, a serious push into live sports would mean securing expensive broadcasting rights that would involve Netflix diverting money away from other content that it produces.

It should be noted that the streaming giant has tested the waters in the live-streaming genre, beginning with entertainment events, such as Chris Rock's comedy special that got a good response.

Meanwhile, Netflix recently expanded its efforts to combat password sharing in multiple countries, including the US. The streaming giant, with over 200 million users across the world, has implemented measures to restrict the sharing of accounts outside of the user's own household in an attempt to generate more revenue due to market saturation.

Netflix has begun notifying its users via email about the limitations on account sharing in 103 countries and territories, including prominent markets like the United States, France, Germany, and Brazil. The emails emphasise that a Netflix account should only be utilized within a single household. However, subscribers have the option to include additional members from outside their homes for an extra fee of $7.99 per month in the United States.
