Stone Pelting, Arson Between Two Communities In Maharashtra's Satara, Internet Suspended Amid Tensions

The tensions had been simmering in the area for some time after a person allegedly uploaded a 'Pakistan Zindabad' post on social media on August 15.

Tension erupted in Mahrashtra's Satara after incidents of stone pelting and arson were reported between the two communities that took place on Sunday night. The internet has been suspended in the area after stones were pelted at a religious site which led to the clash between the two communities. The tensions had been simmering in the area for some time after a person allegedly uploaded a 'Pakistan Zindabad' post on social media on August 15 and wrote objectionable remark against Indian freedom fighters.

Some organisations had filed a complaint against the person and according to the police, leaders from both the communities were called for talks and situation was pacified but some posts were continouslty being uploaded on social media.

Currently, the police said that the situation is under control and Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed.

A person was injured in the clashes last night and is undergoing treatment and the police investigation is on.

The incident comes as the state is alrady witnessing agitaiton by Maratha community over their demand for Kunbi status, which effectively means OBC quota, for all Marathas.

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange has been on hunger strike for the last 13 days and the state witnessed violent agitation.

On Monday, an all-party meeting has been convened in Mumbai to discuss the Maratha quota issue, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said. Addressing a rally in Kolhapur city, nearly 380 km from Mumbai, on Sunday he said several people from the Maratha community were rich but many were poor and needed help.

"While giving the reservation to the Maratha community, it must be ensured that Other Backward Classes are not affected. Only discussions and meetings will solve this issue," Ajit Pawar added.
