Sandeshkhali Violence: BJP's Suvendu Adhikari Moves Court Seeking Permission To Visit Strife-Torn Region

Suvendu Adhikari has reportedly been obstructed by the police from visiting Sandeshkhali, having faced similar obstacles on both Monday and Thursday.

New Delhi: The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking a directive from the state government to allow him to visit the strife-torn region of Sandeshkhali, news agency PTI reported. The BJP leader was reportedly stopped by the police for the second time on Thursday when attempting to visit the area.

In addition to requesting permission to visit Sandeshkhali, Adhikari has also appealed for the deployment of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) personnel to instil confidence among the villagers in the region. Sandeshkhali has been witnessing unrest and protests following allegations of sexual assaults on women by individuals associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Adhikari's plea was presented before Justice Kaushik Chanda's court, with his advocate Rajdeep Majumdar stating that the matter is likely to be heard on Monday.

The BJP MLA from Nandigram has consistently been obstructed by the police from accessing Sandeshkhali, having faced similar obstacles on both Monday and Thursday, PTI reported.

It is to be noted that a previous order imposing Section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure), which restricts gatherings of five or more individuals, in the entire Sandeshkhali police station area was nullified by the Calcutta High Court earlier this week.

However, the court granted the state the authority to request the imposition of such an order for specific areas experiencing disturbances. Consequently, the district administration reinstated movement restrictions in certain parts of Sandeshkhali starting from February 14.

For over a week, Opposition parties, including the BJP, the CPI(M)-led Left Front, and the Congress, have been staging protests over the alleged atrocities against women in Sandeshkhali, located in the North 24 Parganas district. Moreover, residents of villages in the area have also been actively demonstrating against the purported injustices.
