Maharashtra: Shinde Govt Orders CAG Probe Into Sena-Run BMC's Affairs In Last 2 Years

New Delhi: The Maharashtra Government on Monday ordered an investigation into the affairs of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the last two years through the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), as reported by the news agency ANI. The investigation would cover the measures taken during the years -- 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.

According to an official statement from the CMO, the probe will also be done into the allegations of corruption and irregularities in awarding various contracts without tenders. These include setting up several Covid Care facilities in the city and procurement for the Jumbo field hospitals erected during the pandemic years. 

Earlier, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis had announced the CAG audit, in the State Assembly on August 24. Responding to all the allegations of corruption with regard to the BMC , Fadnavis said that investigation by the urban development department of the Maharashtra government and a CAG audit will also be conducted in the matter.

"All the corruption allegations related to the BMC will be investigated by the urban development department of the Maharashtra government and a CAG audit will also be conducted for the same," Fadanvis announced in the Assembly.

The announcement came after a discussion under rule 293 of the Maharashtra legislature, where he said that few employees of BMC are forming their own companies, and were doing BMCs jobs. This will also be investigated, he said. He said, "all the corruption allegations related to Aashraya scheme for giving houses to the sanitation workers will also be looked into on priority."

"29,009 such houses will be given to the sanitation workers with all the property rights, which were earlier denied by the previous government," he added. Fadanvis also assured that the investigation will not be a mere "eyewash" but will be done thoroughly. It will be conducted in time bound manner and a special CAG audit will also be conducted, he said.
