Kerala: IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall, Issues Yellow Alert To 7 Districts

The district administrations have also requested people living in low-lying areas and river banks to remain cautious.

Chennai: As heavy rainfall is predicted in southern and central districts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert to seven districts in the state on Saturday. The MET Department issued alerts to seven districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts.

On Saturday, IMD said, “Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on Saturday. Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely in over one or two places on April 10, 11 and 12. The thunderstorm will also likely be accompanied by gusty winds speech reaching 30-40 Kmph at one or two places on Saturday.”

In this backdrop, the district administrations have requested people living in low-lying areas and river banks to remain cautious. They also told people to avoid standing or working in the open during thunderstorms.

The IMD also issued a warning to fishermen to not to venture into the sea. 

However, IMD withdrew the warning that cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal could intensify into a depression in the coming days, said a report on Manorama.

Meanwhile, many parts of Kerala received above-normal rainfall. The state received at least 48 per cent excess rainfall from April 1 till Thursday.

On Thursday, Pathanamthitta received the highest rainfall of 9 cm followed by Ernakulam with 8 cm, Kottayam and Munnar received six cm each.

On Wednesday, Kerala even reported one rain-related death.
