PM Modi Meets Chess Olympiad Winners At His New Delhi Residence

Before their gold medal win in Budapest, India's best performance at the Chess Olympiad was securing a bronze medal at the 2022 edition held on home soil.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi felicitated Indian men's and women's chess teams for securing nation's first-ever gold medal at the Chess Olympiad.

The 45th Chess Olympiad took place in Budapest, Hungary's capital, featuring 197 teams from 195 countries in the men's category and 183 teams from 181 countries in the women's category.

Earlier today, the Indian Prime Minister hosted the victorious teams at his residence in New Delhi to celebrate their historic achievement.

Before their gold medal win in Budapest, India's best performance at the Chess Olympiad was securing a bronze medal at the 2022 edition held on home soil.

The Indian men's team had previously won bronze medals in the 2014 and 2022 editions of the tournament, while the Indian women's team claimed a bronze medal in the 2022 edition held in Chennai.

The Indian men's team that won the nation's first-ever gold at the Chess Olympiad included notable players such as D Gukesh, Vidit Gujrathi, R Praggnanandhaa, Pentala Harikrishna and Arjun Erigaisi.

The women's team, which also clinched its maiden gold medal, comprised talented players like R Vaishali, D Harika, Tania Sachdev, Divya Deshmukh and Vantika Agarwal.

Chess Olympiad is comparable to the Olympic Games and is often dubbed the Olympics of chess. The first Olympiad was held in Paris in 1924, the same year the Olympic Games took place there. This tournament occurs every two years.
