MI vs DC: BCCI's Solid Backup Plan To Ensure Rain Doesn't Ruin Playoff Decider

Several matches in IPL 2025 have already been disrupted or washed out due to rain.

The Indian Premier League 2025 is in its most thrilling phase, with three teams having already secured their spots in the playoffs.

Now, all eyes are on the battle for the fourth and final berth. The 63rd match of the season, between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC), will be played today at the Wankhede Stadium. This match is crucial in determining who moves ahead - but there's a looming threat: rain.

BCCI's special plan to tackle rain

Several matches in IPL 2025 have already been disrupted or washed out due to rain. Now, with more rain predicted during the final leg of the league stage, BCCI has stepped in with a solid contingency plan.

Until now, if a match was interrupted by rain, 60 minutes of extra time was allotted. But starting May 20, this has been increased to 120 minutes. This will give organizers more time to ensure a result, especially in important matches like MI vs DC. Notably, 120 minutes of extra time is already in place for the playoffs.

Cutoff time also extended

Along with the increased buffer, cutoff time for evening matches has also been extended. Earlier, the deadline to complete a rain-affected evening game was 10:56 PM, but it has now been moved to 11:56 PM. This ensures there's more room to complete the minimum 5 overs per side required for a result.

High-stakes showdown

So far, 4 matches have been abandoned due to rain in IPL 2025, and 2 matches were shortened. BCCI's decision comes as a proactive move to tackle the monsoon season, which is gradually setting in across the country.

If today's match proceeds and Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians defeat Delhi Capitals, MI will become the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs. Fans are hoping that the weather will cooperate, and thanks to the BCCI's new plan, the chances of a result are now much higher.
