Ind vs Eng, 4th Test: Hameed & Burns Continue To Hold Fort; England Need 291 Runs To Win

An all-round effort from India helped them gain a dominant lead by final session. For 7th wicket, Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant attained a solid 100-run partnership to take the game away from hosts.

New Delhi: It may be an uphill task but win for England is for surely possible after Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns added 77-run opening stand to pull hosts back into the game after India were bowled out for 466 in their 2nd innings. India set England a target of 368 in the final session of Day 4 of the ongoing India vs England Oval Test on Sunday. At Stumps on Day 4, England were 77/0 and needed 291 runs to win.

Chasing such a stiff target, England openers got a decent start. The Indian bowlers tried hard but failed to get a breakthrough and now fans are all in for an interesting contest, especially on a day 5 wicket.

A remarkable all-round effort from team India helped them gain a dominant lead by the final session. For the 7th wicket, Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant attained a solid 100-run partnership to take the game away from hosts. The last four Indian wickets piled on the misery on English bowlers and frustrated them by adding 154 runs.

In India's 2nd innings, Rohit Sharma top-scored 127 runs for India with his maiden overseas ton. Apart from him, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur contributed with 61, 50 and 60 runs respectively. Captain Virat Kohli scored 44 and KL Rahul scored 46 runs.  Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane once again disappointed and got out for a duck.

Chris Woakes was the pick of England bowlers and bagged 3 wickets. Ollie Robinson and Moeen Ali picked 2 wickets apiece. Veteran James Anderson, Craig Overton and captain Joe Root picked 1 wicket each.

At Lunch on Day 4, the match was poised tantalizingly as neither India nor England were dominating the game. India needed a big session to put themselves on top and started well on Day 4 but after 30 minutes of play, introduction of Chris Woakes changed it all as the English bowlers bagged three big wickets, conceding only 59 runs. At Lunch, India were effectively 230 for the loss of six wickets.

Making his comeback from injury, Chris Woakes produced a majestic spell by taking two quick wickets to dent India. The speedster first caught Ravindra Jadeja plumb in front of stumps, and later dismissed out-of-sorts team India Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane for a duck. But the big prized wicket of dangerous-looking Virat Kohli was picked by spinner Moeen Ali as he sent the Indian captain packing for just 44. Virat has not been able to score a century in international cricket since 2019.

Earlier on Day 3 of the ongoing Oval Test, Rohit Sharma's heroic 127-run knock- his maiden overseas ton - and his crucial partnerships with Cheteshwar Pujara and K.L. Rahul helped India take a 171-run lead before bad light forced early stumps. At the end of Day 3's play, India were 271/3 on Saturday.
