Shubman Gill As Captain - Performance, Stats & What To Expect In Tests

Shubman Gill has led India in 5 T20Is during the Zimbabwe tour, winning 4 and losing 1.

India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Saturday announced the squad for the upcoming Test series against England. Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new Test captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma, while Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain despite recent struggles with form.

Gill's Captaincy Record

Shubman Gill has led India in 5 T20Is during the Zimbabwe tour, winning 4 and losing 1. In the IPL, he captained Gujarat Titans in 25 matches, securing 14 wins and 11 losses - a promising start to his leadership career.

Test Performance Overview

In 32 Test matches, Gill has scored 1893 runs in 59 innings, averaging 35.06 with a strike rate of 59.92. His tally includes 5 centuries and 7 half-centuries.

Performance in Overseas Conditions

Shubman Gill has played 15 overseas Tests, scoring 716 runs at an average of 27.54 with 1 century and 2 fifties. His performance away from home remains an area for improvement.

Experience in England

Shubman Gill has played just one Test in England (2021), scoring 36 runs at an average of 18.

Why Gill over Bumrah? Chief selector Agarkar explains

"Bumrah because he has led us in Australia but one, he is not available for all the Test matches. I think we wanted him more as a player. It's always extra burden when you are managing 15-16 people. It takes a lot out of you. We would rather have him as a bowler. Hope he has a big series. He is an important player for us, so having him fit as a bowler important. He knows where his body is at the moment," Agarkar said in a press conference.

"With KL not really, basically he captained a while back but I was not there at that time. We hope he has a big series. But, regarding Bumrah, having hims fit as a bowler is crucial."

"You don't select a captain for one or two series, you have to plan for the longer term. We are hopeful that he [Shubman Gill] will learn with time," he explained.

India's squad for England Test series: Shubman Gill (Captain), Rishabh Pant (Vice-Captain & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav
