Rishabh Pant To Bat In Manchester Test If Needed Despite Injury, Confirms BCCI

Pant was struck on the leg by a delivery from England pacer Chris Woakes while batting in India’s first innings.

In a major development during the fourth Test match between India and England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will be available to bat if required, despite suffering an injury on Day 1 of the match.

Pant was struck on the leg by a delivery from England pacer Chris Woakes while batting in India’s first innings. The impact led to immediate discomfort and a subsequent medical evaluation.

"Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper.

"Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements." BCCI said in a post on X.

No major damage detected

As per the BCCI's official statement, Pant was taken to a nearby hospital for scans and medical assistance. Fortunately, no major damage was detected, but the injury was serious enough to rule him out from taking the field for wicketkeeping duties in England's first innings.

Dhruv Jurel to keep wickets

Dhruv Jurel has stepped in as the substitute wicketkeeper for the remainder of the Test. Jurel, who made his debut earlier in the series, will handle the gloves while Pant recuperates. However, the BCCI has kept the door open for Pant to return to bat in India’s second innings, should the team require his services.

This update comes as a boost for India, as Pant’s batting in the lower-middle order has been crucial in swinging matches in India's favor on several occasions. Known for his fearless strokeplay and ability to counterattack under pressure, Pant remains a valuable asset, especially on challenging pitches.

While the team management will monitor his condition closely, the decision to allow Pant to bat will ultimately depend on the match situation and medical clearance closer to the time he’s needed.
