Who Wins If India vs England 1st Test Is Cancelled Due To Rain? ICC Rules Explained

The Indian team will be led by Shubman Gill, who takes over the red-ball captaincy following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, while Ben Stokes continues to lead a strong English side.

India vs England weather update: The first Test of the five-match series between India and England will begin on Friday, June 20, at Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

Both teams have completed their preparations with practice games — including an intra-squad match for Team India — and are all set to begin their journey in the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).

The Indian team will be led by Shubman Gill, who takes over the red-ball captaincy following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, while Ben Stokes continues to lead a strong English side.

What If Rain Interrupts IND vs ENG 1st Test Match?

While current forecasts suggest that the weather in Leeds will remain clear for all five days, there’s always an element of unpredictability when it comes to English conditions. If, however, the match is washed out completely due to rain, neither India nor England will be declared the winner.

According to ICC rules, in case of a rain-affected or abandoned Test match, the result is considered a draw, and no reserve day is available — as this is a standard WTC match and not a final. Both teams will receive equal WTC points for a drawn match.

Shubman Gill Confident Ahead of His First Test Series as Captain

Ahead of the series opener, new Indian captain Shubman Gill spoke about the team’s mindset and preparations. “Our team is ready. We have nothing to lose, but a lot to gain,” he said confidently during the pre-match press conference.

Gill emphasized the influence of India’s senior players over the past decade: “Our seniors have shown us how to win anywhere in the world. They’ve set a blueprint for success, and we are going to follow it.”

Alongside Gill, Rishabh Pant will play a key leadership role as the vice-captain of the team.
