He Only Played Three Balls': Rohit Sharma's Straightforward Take On Suryakumar Yadav After 1st ODI

Mitchell Starc snared Surya in the first ODI between India and Australia, while he was sent back to the pavilion again by the same bowler in the second game.

After getting out on three consecutive golden ducks in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia, India’s Suryakumar Yadav has come under the scanner. He is one of the finest batters when it comes to the shortest format of the game but he has not yet acclimatized to the ODI format.

Surya has made 433 runs in 23 ODI matches at an average of 24.05, not making justice to the class he possesses. However, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma has backed him despite the three golden ducks he made.

"He only played three balls in three (games) this series. I don't know how much to look into it. He got three good balls, to be honest. Today, it wasn't that good ball; he should have gone forward. He knows best. He plays spin so well. We have seen that over last couple of years. That's why we held him back and give him that role for the last 15-20 overs where he can play his game, but it's really unfortunate he could only play three balls. That can happen to anyone. But the potential and ability is always there. He is just going through that phase right now," said Rohit after the game.

Mitchell Starc snared Surya in the first ODI between India and Australia, while he was sent back to the pavilion again by the same bowler in the second game. On Wednesday, during the third ODI, Ashton Agar cleaned up the Mumbai-based batter on a quick delivery that rattled the stumps.

Surya also became the sixth Indian batter who made three back-to-back ducks in ODIs. Players like Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah are on the list already. Talking about the final ODI, Australia defeated India by 21 runs in the third and the final ODI of the series against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday.
