England's Rising Star Gus Atkinson Matches 147-Year-Old Feat In Test Cricket

Gus Atkinson's achievement is remarkable as he joins an elite group of bowlers who have taken 50 Test wickets within a year of their debut.

England fast bowler Gus Atkinson etched his name in Test cricket history by becoming only the second bowler to take 50 wickets in first year of Test cricket. He reached this milestone on the opening day of the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton, claiming three wickets to take his tally to 51.

Atkinson's achievement is remarkable as he joins an elite group of bowlers who have taken 50 Test wickets within a year of their debut. The only other player to accomplish this was Australia's Terry Alderman, who claimed 54 wickets in just 10 Tests during his debut year in 1981. The 25-year-old made his debut in Test cricket against the West Indies on July 10 at Lord's.

In his Test career to date, Atkinson has bowled in 20 innings and failed to take a wicket on just one occasion.

Known for his pace and precision, Atkinson has quickly become a vital cog in England's bowling attack. His ability to adapt and excel across different conditions has established him as one of the most promising talents in world cricket. This milestone truly marks the beginning of what promises to be an illustrious career.

New Zealand in firm control on day 1 of NZ vs ENG 3rd Test

On the first day of the third Test between New Zealand and England, the Kiwis posted 315/9. Mitchell Santner reached his fourth Test fifty, hitting a six off the final ball of the day. New Zealand got off to a solid start, with Tom Latham and Will Young putting on 105 runs for the first wicket.

Meanwhile, Tim Southee hit his 98th career six, closing in on the milestone of 100 sixes in Test cricket. Although England has already secured a 2-0 series lead, the outcome of this match holds little relevance for their World Test Championship (WTC) hopes, as they have already been eliminated from contention.
