BCCI's New Rulebook: Players To Be Penalized For Failure? All You Need To Know

The idea stems from concerns over Indian cricket team's recent Test series losses to New Zealand and Australia.

Team India is facing a challenging phase following their defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Test series against Australia. In response to the setback, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently held a review meeting in Mumbai on January 11 to discuss possible changes.

According to a report in The Indian Express, one significant proposal under consideration is a performance-based salary system, where players' earnings would directly reflect their on-field contributions, with deductions for underperformance.

The idea stems from concerns over recent Test series losses to New Zealand and Australia.

According to the Indian Express report, newly appointed BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia and treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia are spearheading this initiative as part of broader reforms to enhance accountability and incentivize consistent performances. The new system would reward players for excellence while addressing lapses in form or commitment.

A performance-driven incentive structure is not new to Indian cricket. Currently, players who participate in over 50% of Test matches in a season earn an additional Rs 30 lakh per match, while those involved in at least 75% of matches receive Rs 45 lakh per match. Introduced to promote Test cricket, these measures highlight BCCI’s ongoing focus on the red-ball format.

The board has also urged players to prioritize Test cricket amid growing concerns that it is being overshadowed by white-ball formats.

BCCI's new travel rule for Indian cricketers

After India's 3-1 defeat in the Test series against Australia, BCCI has reportedly implemented new measures to strengthen team discipline. Under these rules, the duration of players' wives accompanying them on tours has been reduced. Also, all players are now mandated to travel together in the team bus to enhance team bonding during international tournaments.
