Darren Sammy Breaks Silence On Rape Accusations Against WI Player

Controversy surrounds WI vs AUS Test series as a West Indies star player, accused of rape, remains part of Windies squad.

A three-Test series is underway between West Indies and Australia. After Australia clinched the first Test with a convincing 159-run win, the focus now shifts to the second match, beginning July 3.

However, controversy surrounds the series as a West Indies star player, accused of rape, remains part of the squad.

We believe in justice, says Sammy

Ahead of the second Test, West Indies head coach Darren Sammy has addressed the issue, delivering a strong message on the matter. He stated: "One thing I can say is that we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served. However, there's a process. We will continue to support in whatever way we can to make sure that due process and the right system are followed. As a cricketing board, and for me as the head coach, I want justice for everyone."

The controversy stems from a recent report by Guyana-based Kaieteur News, which claims several women have accused a Windies cricketer of rape, with some allegations dating back to before 2023.

Ex-Windies all-rounder Sammy, now serving as head coach across all three formats, said he is focused on keeping morale high ahead of the upcoming match.

"We are all aware of what's been going on in the media. I am very close to my players. I've had conversations with them, making sure their mental space is good," he said.

'Can't answer that'

When asked whether Cricket West Indies should conduct its own investigation into the matter, Sammy responded: "I can't answer that."

He added: "I'm pretty sure they are doing all they can to make sure, like I said, the right process is followed." From July 3 onwards, West Indies and Australia lock horns in second Test of three-match series.
