Like the Innova Hycross flex fuel car we saw, this is also a prototype with its 1.8l petrol engine being compatible with ethanol-blended fuel. This car can also run on pure ethanol at a much higher level which lowers costs, emissions and more. (Image Source: Somnath Chatterjee)

For now, India is looking to increase the count to 20 per cent with a hybrid powertrain which includes electric, petrol and ethanol, the emissions are lower. To achieve such compatibility with high levels of ethanol, this prototype had to be extensively modified and various components were changed or added. (Image Source: Somnath Chatterjee)

Toyota also says that there is no change in performance too while costs reduce along with being cleaner. With a higher blending of ethanol, India's oil bill will go down and alongside regular petrol/ethanol blends, a hybrid powertrain would also be there with Toyota expected to bring in a flex-fuel Innova Hycross. While sedans of this class have disappeared, the Corolla brand name remains strong although Toyota does not have plans to bring the Corolla back or bring a flex-fuel version. This particular car is a technology showcase and by 2025, expect flex-fuel cars with a higher ethanol blend a reality. (Image Source: Somnath Chatterjee)
