Alia Bhatt Gets Candid About Her ADHD And Anxiety Diagnosis: 'I Was Struggling'

New Delhi: Alia Bhatt has been an advocate for mental health awareness since she was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and anxiety. In a candid interview with author Jay Shetty, Alia revealed details of her mental health journey, including the fact that she is not on medication. She described the effect of ADHD on her everyday life, stating that her body often behaves abnormally during social circumstances.

Alia Bhatt Finding Courage in Others' Stories

According to Alia, it was after listening to other people's accounts of their battles with anxiety and ADHD that she felt comfortable enough to share more about her own difficulties. The actress said, "It often happens to me when I see an A-list celebrity, whether from Hollywood or even here, speak about something I relate to. And I think, 'Oh, they’re feeling it too.' It happens to all of us. That’s when I became more open to talking about my specific anxiety. I was recently clinically diagnosed, so I had proper backing, not just saying, 'Oh, I’m having an anxious day.' It’s not just that."

Reflecting on her own experiences, She said,  "I was struggling, which is why I sought help.”

She went on to explain how her troubles had impacted her social life, adding, In social gatherings, my body would physically react. I’d start heating up. I also found it hard to focus; my attention kept drifting in and out."

Alia also shared that she used to be quite proud of her ability to juggle many tasks at once, but that she now sees how it affected her mental health. "I realised that while I can multitask, it takes a toll on me. I needed to understand why. I started forgetting the most random things, even things I had scheduled," she said.

Regarding her career, Alia Bhatt has two upcoming films: 'Alpha', directed by Shiv Ravail, and 'Love and War', produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
