Ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has taken a sharp swipe at his former alliance partners, with his “chavanni to rupee” remark being seen as a direct political reference to Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary. Without naming Jayant Chaudhary or the RLD, Akhilesh Yadav recalled his party’s past alliances and said that despite turning a “chavanni” into a rupee, political partners eventually left. The comment has reignited memories of the SP-RLD alliance and the dramatic shift in Uttar Pradesh’s political equations ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The SP and RLD had contested the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election together. The Samajwadi Party won 100 seats, while the RLD secured eight. However, before the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Jayant Chaudhary moved the RLD out of the SP alliance and joined the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. Akhilesh Yadav’s choice of the “chavanni” reference is particularly significant because Jayant Chaudhary had previously used the term himself while speaking about political expectations and alliances. The latest exchange has therefore brought an old political conversation back into the spotlight. The RLD has also pushed back against the SP chief’s remarks, arguing that the party’s contribution to the 2022 alliance should not be understated and that political partnerships depend on mutual respect and alliance commitments.
