Counting Begins: Will Delhi See A Hung Assembly, BJP's Return, Or Another AAP Surprise?

Delhi Election Results 2025: Counting of votes has begun, and the fate of 699 contesting candidates will soon be revealed. Will BJP come to power, will AAP retain its stronghold, or does Congress have a surprise in store? All will be unveiled soon.

The clock has struck 8 AM, and the counting process has begun for the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025. As per the rules, postal ballots will be counted first, followed by the opening of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to tally votes for the 70-member Delhi Assembly. The National Capital Territory (NCT) grants certain privileges to India’s capital but also introduces complexities in administration due to its Union Territory (UT)-like structure.

Interesting Political Tug-Of-War

The last Delhi Assembly elections, held in 2020, saw the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) securing a thumping majority with 62 assembly seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trailed in second place with 8 seats. Congress, on the other hand, failed to secure any seats. Since then, Delhi has witnessed two more elections—the Municipal Corporation polls in 2022 and the Lok Sabha elections in 2024—both yielding varied results.

In the 2022 Delhi Municipal Corporation elections, the BJP, which had controlled the municipal body despite AAP’s dominance in the assembly, lost its grip as AAP secured the mandate with 134 wards. The BJP finished second with 104 wards, while Congress managed to win just 9. However, just two years later, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Delhi voters gave all seven parliamentary seats to the BJP, despite AAP and Congress contesting together as part of the I.N.D.I.A. bloc.

These two electoral flip-flops indicate the unpredictable nature of Delhi’s electorate. If exit polls are to be believed, the battle for Delhi is expected to be a close one, with the BJP having a slight edge while AAP remains in close contention. The elephant in the room—a potential split mandate—could even result in a hung assembly.

As counting progresses, the wait to find out who will govern the National Capital Territory will soon be over. Follow our LIVE Blog for the latest updates on the Delhi Election Results 2025.
