Pune: Foetus, Infant Body Parts Found Dumped In Containers, Nursing Home Under Scanner

A discarded foetus and infant body parts were found in containers near a petrol pump in Pune. Police suspect the remains may originate from a nearby nursing home's biomedical waste.

A foetus and multiple infant body parts were found dumped in glass and plastic containers at a garbage site in Daund, Maharashtra’s Pune district on Tuesday, police said. According to officials, ten containers containing biomedical waste were found discarded by the roadside in Borawake Chowk, Daund, in the morning.

“We found one foetus and some vestigial organs. All these were disposed of in 10 different glass containers in a wrongful manner at a garbage site,” said Inspector Gopal Pawar of Daund police station, as per news agency PTI.

The body parts, stuffed in containers, appeared to belong to five to six infants and were dumped in the open area situated near a petrol pump, as per a report by India Today.

Remains Could Be Part Of Nursing Home’s Biomedical Waste: Pune DSP

Pune District Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pankaj Deshmukh stated that a nursing home was located near the site where the remains were discovered. Preliminary investigations suggested that the remains could be part of the facility’s biomedical waste disposal process, India Today's report stated. Officials were examining whether the disposal followed proper protocols.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Bapurao Tadas said, “This morning, plastic jars were found in an open area near a petrol pump in Borawake Nagar, Daund. Inside these jars, the body of an infant was discovered. Additionally, seven to eight other jars contained body parts.”

Following the discovery, police registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 89 (causing a miscarriage without the woman’s consent), Section 90 (death caused by an act done with intent to cause miscarriage), Section 271 (negligently spreading a disease dangerous to life), and Section 272 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), PTI reported.

Authorities have said that further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
