‘Hum Honge Kangaal’: Defiant Kunal Kamra Posts Shiv Sena Vandalism Visuals With Parody Song — Video

Comedian Kunal Kamra posted a video of Shiv Sena workers vandalising a comedy club in Mumbai. The video shows party workers hurling chairs, scattering documents, and preparing to burn Kamra's effigy.

Comedian Kunal Kamra on Tuesday posted a video featuring visuals of Shiv Sena workers vandalising the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, Mumbai, where his comedy special was shot. The video was overlaid with a satirical song from the show, in which Kamra had altered the lyrics of the popular “Hum Honge Kamyaab” (We Shall Overcome) to “Hum Honge Kangaal” (We Shall Be Bankrupt).

The footage showed Sena workers hurling chairs, scattering documents and photographs on the stairs, and causing destruction inside the venue. The video also captured them burning Kamra’s photo and preparing to set fire to his effigy. Another clip showed them flashing victory signs after securing bail from a magistrate’s court following their arrest for the vandalism.

Among those featured in Kamra’s post was Shiv Sena Yuva Sena General Secretary Rahool Kanal, one of the 12 individuals arrested for ransacking the studio. Speaking to news agency ANI, Kanal said, “It is not about taking any law in your hands. It is purely about your self-respect. When it comes to elders or respectable citizens of the country… when your elders are targeted, you will target someone of that mentality… The message (for Kunal Kamra) is clear: ‘This is just the trailer, the full picture is yet to come.’ Whenever you are in Mumbai, you will get a good lesson in Shiv Sena style.”

‘Working For Someone’: Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde On Kunal Kamra’s Videos

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also weighed in on the controversy, likening Kamra’s satire to taking a “supari” (contract) to speak against someone. “Freedom of speech is there, but there should be a limit,” Shinde said at a BBC Marathi event on Monday, reacting to Kamra’s comments.

The 36-year-old comedian had sparked a political storm with his jibes at Shinde’s political career. During his show, Kamra performed a parody of a song from the Bollywood film Dil Toh Pagal Hai, referring to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) and making jokes about the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) splits.

On Sunday night, Shiv Sena members vandalised the Habitat Comedy Club and a hotel in whose premises the club is located, in response to Kamra’s show. Addressing this, Shinde said, “The other person should also maintain a certain level. Otherwise, action causes reaction.” He, however, added, “I do not justify vandalism.”

Referring to Kamra’s past comments, Shinde said, “This same person has commented on the Supreme Court of India, the Prime Minister, (journalist) Arnab Goswami, and some industrialists. This is not freedom of speech; this is working for someone.”

Kamra has refused to apologise for his remarks and has criticised the vandalism at the comedy venue.

Shinde, meanwhile, emphasised that he prioritises governance over responding to allegations. “Nowadays, I don’t reply to allegations. I say my work will be my reply. I’ve always prioritised work. All the projects like Atal Setu, Coastal Road (both in Mumbai), and Metro projects had stopped abruptly. We restarted them, giving priority to development and welfare schemes,” he said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

He also highlighted key state welfare initiatives, including the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme, the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ scheme, and the decision to provide free education for girls. “The state government has taken many decisions and implemented the necessary government resolutions (GRs),” Shinde stated, adding, “So, I don’t focus on who says what; I answer them through my work.”
