In response to a potential war-like situation or severe national security crisis, the Mumbai Civil Defence Department has issued a detailed and structured safety advisory. The guidelines are aimed at safeguarding citizens, residential societies, schools, and corporate offices.

The directive is intended to enhance public awareness, ensure safety, and enable a coordinated response during emergencies. The advisory comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, India's fight against cross-border terrorism funded by Pakistan.

Emergency Guidelines For Citizens

The Mumbai Civil Defence Department's advisory mention the following points:

  • Follow updates only from official government channels—TV, radio, and verified social media accounts. Avoid rumours.
  • Keep an emergency kit ready with a torch, batteries, first aid supplies, essential medicines, water, dry food, power banks, ID proof, and cash.
  • Learn about the nearest bunkers, shelters, and blackout protocols.
  • Upon getting an emergency alert, stay away from windows, switch off lights, and use stairs instead of elevators.
  • Set communication points for family members, assign responsibilities, and ensure special care for children, the elderly, and pets.
  • Avoid clicking suspicious links and sharing sensitive information online.

For Housing Societies

Appoint an information coordinator and use notice boards or digital platforms to share verified updates.

Identify safe zones like basements or interior corridors, maintain clear evacuation paths, and display floor maps.

Use curtains during blackouts, avoid elevators, prepare kits, and ensure vulnerable groups are cared for.

Maintain a visitor register and restrict unnecessary movement.

Conduct drills in coordination with the Civil Defence Department.

For Corporate Offices

Appoint crisis coordinators and brief employees on standard operating procedures.

Prioritise work-from-home setups, secure data backups, and minimise on-site movement.

Mark safe zones and ensure availability of essential supplies like torches, emergency kits, and backup power.

Act immediately upon alerts — turn off lights and devices, and avoid using elevators.

Provide mental health support and maintain open lines of communication.

For Schools

Be prepared to shift to online classes if physical sessions are suspended.

Identify safe zones, keep attendance updated, and increase gate surveillance.

Offer counselling and emotional assistance to students during stressful times.

React only to verified official communication.
