Mahindra Thar 2WD 4x2 Review: More Value Than 4WD?
There are two new colours on offer and I do like this Bronze colour while there is obviously no 4x4 badging anymore. Else, there is not much new but neither it is required in terms of changing anyways
The Thar has been a big success in its new avatar but more than being a capable off-roader it is the lifestyle aspect which has meant the broader appeal for this SUV. It is more comfortable now, there are more features and you can drive it everyday within our urban jungles. Not everyone uses the 4X4 capabilities of the Thar and that is where the 2WD version comes into play. It makes the Thar lighter and makes it a lifestyle vehicle for those who would not go for hardcore off-roading.
The 2WD Thar expands its appeal and will bring in more buyers too while the off-road oriented buyers will still flock to the 4x4.
There are two new colours on offer and I do like this Bronze colour while there is obviously no 4x4 badging anymore. Else, there is not much new but neither it is required in terms of changing anyways.
The interior is where you see the larger changes with the 4x4 gear lever not being there and replaced by another storage space. You also get new controls which have been repositioned. There is a stop/start function now as well.
The Thar now gets a smaller 1.5l diesel with RWD while the petrol remains the same 2.0l one. The 1.5l diesel makes 118hp and 300Nm while the 2.0l petrol makes 150hp and 300Nm (320Nm with the automatic).
Both 6-speed automatic and manuals are on offer too. The switch to RWD means less weight and better efficiency while the toughness continues to be there too. The petrol would be preferred in Delhi NCR for obvious reasons and it is a very smooth unit while less weight makes the RWD even more fun to drive.
It leaps off with eager acceleration and feels quick with nearly as much torque as the diesel. The refinement is excellent as well while RWD makes it lighter to drive and grip isn't an issue when driven hard. The slightly bouncy ride remains but the sophisticated driving experience is a world away from the earlier Thar in terms of the controlled body roll or the refined engine to the improved NVH levels.
Another benefit is slightly better fuel economy than the 4x4 Thar. All these factors make it an interesting alternative to a conventional compact SUV and it is perfect for those who want the Thar but will mostly use it for on-road purposes. Expect to see more Thars on the road soon.
