Meta Rolls Out Redesigned WhatsApp Mac App That Allows 8 People On Group Video Calls

Months after introducing the WhatsApp app for Windows desktop, Meta is now rolling out a redesigned WhatsApp app for macOS.

Months after introducing the WhatsApp app for Windows desktop, Meta is now rolling out the WhatsApp app for macOS users, it has announced. With this, WhatsApp's native app would be available for making group calls for Apple's desktop OS. With the new WhatsApp app for Mac, users can now make group calls from Mac for the first time, connecting with up to eight people on video calls and up to 32 people on audio calls. Users on Mac can join a group call after it has started, see the call history and choose to receive incoming call notifications even when the app is closed.

"Launching a new WhatsApp app for Mac. Group calls up to 8 people on video and 32 on audio," company CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in a facebook post on Tuesday.

Meta has noted that WhatsApp for Mac "keeps your personal messages and calls private across devices with end-to-end encryption". The new WhatsApp app is now available to download from WhatsApp.com and it will become available on the Apple App Store soon, a WhatsApp blog post read.

"The app is redesigned to be familiar to Mac users, helping you get more done faster when using WhatsApp on a large screen. You can now share files by easily dragging and dropping into a chat, and can view more of your chat history," the company wrote in the blog post.

In March this year, Meta introduced a WhatsApp app for Windows, which it claimed "loads faster and is built with an interface familiar to WhatsApp and Windows users". This app too allows users to host group calls with up to 8 people on video, and calls with up to 32 people on audio.

The company said at that time it would increase these limits over time.
