Panos Panay To Head Amazon Devices Team After Almost 20 Years At Microsoft

Panos Panay will take over after the outgoing hardware lead Dave Limp moves on from Amazon.

After spending more than 19 years at Microsoft, Panos Panay is joining Amazon to lead its Devices & Services business (D&S), and he will report to Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO announced on Wednesday. Panay was the product head at Microsoft and his most recent role was of an EVP and Chief Product Officer, leading the Windows and Devices division at Microsoft. He will take over after the outgoing hardware lead Dave Limp moves on from Amazon. Limp oversees the development of Amazon's consumer devices like Fire TV, Echo, and Kindle as well as the Alexa voice assistant.

As reported earlier, Limp will remain in his role for the next few months. Limp previously mentioned that he is not quitting as he is "less bullish about the devices and services business" at Amazon.

"Panos will start at the end of October, and Dave Limp will work with him over the next couple of months to ensure a smooth transition. I remain quite excited about the invention happening and businesses that we’re building in D&S, and look forward to working with Panos," Jassy wrote in a note.

Panos decided to move on from Microsoft earlier this month after spending almost two decades.

"I’ve known Panos for years, and believe he will be a great addition to this organization moving forward. He is a passionate product leader and I can’t wait to see what all of you invent together. I’ll work diligently with him for the next two months to ensure a smooth transition through our fall launches and getting through our OP1 planning," Limp wrote.

Limp, meanwhile, is leaving Amazon to become the CEO of Jeff Bezos' space firm Blue Origin.

This comes at a time when retail giant Amazon's device division has been struggling to generate revenue and has been a target of mass layoffs at the tech giant.

Limp would retire after a stint of more than 13 years at Amazon and this would be a major exit since Jassy took over the company in 2021. A number of top executives have left the company in the past two years. The announcement was made jointly by Limp and Jassy, in a note to Amazon employees, last month.
