Now, Delete Threads Without Deleting Instagram Account

This development comes weeks after Instagram Threads got a web version which has been the most requested feature.

Users will soon be able to delete their Threads accounts without deleting Instagram accounts, says a report by TechCrunch. The ability to delete Threads account without deleting Instagram was missing and parent Meta also drew flak for it. Instagram Threads, the touted rival to Twitter, now X, received an initial rush and hit 100 million users within five days of launch. However, the app couldn't sustain that and its popularity started dwindling with reports in August saying the app lost 75 per cent of its followers on Android. Threads is still struggling to retain its users.

Meta-owned Instagram Threads is now preparing to roll out a separate account deletion for Threads by December, the report added. Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt, Michel Protti, Meta’s chief privacy officer for product, recently said that the social networking giant is working on launching an "actual deletion" feature for Threads accounts.

This development comes weeks after Instagram Threads got a web version which has been the most requested feature. Initially, users on the web version would be able to post, view feeds and interact with posts but the service won't be at par with the Threads app for iOS and Android, the company was quoted as saying.

Earlier, Instagram head Adam Mosseri posted Threads is working on a web version. "We’re working on it! We’ve been using an early version internally for a week or two. Still needs some work before we can open it up to everyone though…," Mosseri posted on Threads.

The "Twitter rival" has lost more than 75 per cent of its daily active users (DAUs) on Android, a recent report said. According to analytics firm Similarweb, the Instagram Threads app for Android peaked at 49.3 million daily active users on July 7, globally. Now, the app has lost 79 per cent of its DAUs. As on August 7, the app's DAUs were down to 10.3 million.
