Long-Form Tweets To 10k Characters Soon With Simple Formatting Tools: Musk

Musk said the micro-blogging platform will soon increase the long-form tweets to 10,000 characters, and also making it much easier for writers to charge subscription fees for premium content

Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday hinted that the micro-blogging platform will soon increase the long-form tweets to 10,000 characters, along with simple formatting tools.

A user posted a tweet saying, "Genius, @twitter and @elonmusk decision to allow long-form content on Twitter is brilliant product design. There will be less click bait type of articles and people staying on Twitter for longer."

Musk responded to the above tweet saying, "Increasing long form to 10k characters soon, along with simple formatting tools." "And making it much easier for writers to charge subscription fees for premium content."

However, the Twitter chief did not provide a timeline as to when this new feature will arrive.  Earlier this month, the company said it will extend "long-form tweets" to 10,000 characters.

It also said Blue subscribers in the US can post long tweets of up to 4,000 characters on the platform. Only Blue subscribers can post longer tweets, but non-subscribers can read, reply, retweet, and quote tweet to them.

Earlier, tweets were restricted to only 280 characters, which still applies to non-subscribers.

Musk has also indicated that Twitter is exploring a subscription service that would allow users to charge followers for specific content. While the recent layoffs at Twitter by Musk have made it tough for the micro-blogging platform to protect users from trolling, state-sponsored disinformation campaigns, and even child sexual exploitation, according to BBC report.

The company's content safety, moderation, and policy teams have been hit hard by the layoffs, which have reduced the workforce to less than 2,000 employees from over 7,500 a few months ago. As a result, tools to protect Twitter users from harassment and trolling are proving difficult to maintain, with hate thriving and a rise in child sexual exploitation.

Musk has recently completed his fourth round of layoffs at Twitter, affecting over 200 employees, including product managers, engineers, and data science teams.
