5G Rollout Will Change The Way We Perceive Digital Entertainment

5G Rollout: New Connectivity Will Enhance User Experience

The upcoming 2022 5G network rollout in India will have a major impact on the relationship between people and digital entertainment. The improved connectivity of the novel generation of cell phone networks will bring a profound transformation to the rapidly booming mobile gaming sub-sector providing a brand new user experience.

With data download speeds increased up to ten times, spectrum efficiency raised up to three times, and with ultra-low latency, all activities over the mobile internet will be enhanced.

For example, the ease of checking on live Satta rates and cricket betting tips from the smartphone will be unparalleled, and mobile gaming will become much more immersive.

India is a mobile-first and a price-conscious nation and currently ranks second in the world in terms of smartphone users whose number approached 85 crores at the end of 2021, as per Statista estimates. According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), there are currently 43 crore mobile gamers in the country and their number is expected to reach 65 crores by 2025.

IAMAI also estimates that more than 40 per cent of hardcore mobile gamers are paying to play their games with average monthly spends moving around ₹ 230. Projections on the future growth of the desi gaming market estimate its size to have reached $ 3.9 billion by the year 2025.

"A majority of Indians have realised that mobile gaming is not just a source of enjoyment or entertainment, but also a source of earning real money. Higher adoption of smartphones, wider internet access, a large number of mobile-first games, and influencers with huge fan bases are also catalysing the growth of gaming in India," comments Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek India, one of the leading producers of chips for smartphones.

The restrictions and lockdowns brough by Covid-19 fueled the organic growth of the mobile gaming industry as app downloads jumped by 50 per cent and user engagement rose by 20 per cent during the pandemic, as per IAMAI data. At the same time, with 75 per cent of its population below the age of 45, India is among the most promising online gaming markets in the whole world.

"Advent of 5G in India will drive this momentum even further and enhance gaming experiences due to factors like higher data speeds, lower latency, and technologies like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. Moreover, to address this upcoming demand and meet consumer expectations, many OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) have already launched a range of 5G-enabled smartphones," says Sachin Kalantari, Product Marketing Senior Director of Qualcomm India.

As per a recent statement by the Union’s Department of Telecommunication (DoT), the rollout of 5G networks in India will start in 2022 with 13 large cities. The residents of Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune will be the first to experience 5G connectivity. Leading telecom operators Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have already conducted 5G trials in the majority of these cities during the previous year.

The year 2022 will bring yet another milestone in the recognition of esports and online gaming. "The inclusion of online games as an official sport for medal events at the 'Asian Games 2022' will be a game-changer. We will witness a steady increase in esports tournaments," comments Sean Hyunil Sohn, Head of Krafton’s India Division, the company that developed 'Player Unknown's Battlegrounds' (PUBG).

"Today, everyone is looking at digital for productivity, while entertainment, fun and socialisation is something that people are preferring offline in the real world. Perhaps in 2023 when we see more of the metaverse happening, gaming might see some newness attracting attention," said Techarc’s founder and chief analyst Faisal Kawoosa.
