Maharashtra Opposition Moves No Confidence Motion Against Speaker Rahul Narvekar

The MLAs presented the motion, claiming that the Speaker had denied the Opposition members permission to speak in the House.

New Delhi: A "No Confidence Motion" was filed against Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar on Thursday by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the former ruling alliance in Maharashtra between the Congress, Shiv Sena (led by Uddhav Thackeray), and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), reported news agency ANI.

The MLAs presented the motion, claiming that the Speaker had denied the Opposition members permission to speak in the House.

The members of the MVA claimed that 39 MLAs had signed the motion.

In this regard, MLAs Sunil Kedar, Sunil Prabhu, Suresh Varpudkar, and Anil Patil also gave a letter to Legislative Secretary Rajendra Bhagwat.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had described Narvekar as the youngest Speaker of the Legislative Assembly so far in the country. Narvekar's father-in-law and NCP leader Ramraje Naik is the chairman of the Legislative Council. The special session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly began at 11 am on July 3, when Narvekar was elected Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Earlier on December 22, Senior NCP leader Jayant Patil was suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly for the rest of the winter session for his remarks against Speaker Rahul Narvekar.

The move by the Speaker came after Jayant Patil and Narvekar became involved in a heated exchange on the floor of the House. According to the media website Mint, Patil accused the Speaker of displaying "shameless behaviour" as Narvekar refused to let the Opposition raise some issues during the Winter Session.

Patil's remarked caused a huge uproar in the Assembly.

After the heated exchange, a meeting was held with Narvekar. Soon after that, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil tabled a proposal in the Maharashtra Assembly to suspend Patil which was accepted by a voice vote.
