Kerala & Tamil Nadu Experience Rainfall Amid Scorching Heat, IMD Forecasts Continued Showers Until April 15

On Friday, rainfall drenched various areas of Thiruvananthapuram city offering a reprieve to residents from the relentless heat.

In a respite from the scorching sun, parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala received rainfall on Friday. Earlier, India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that light to moderate rainfall with strong winds would be experienced in Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from April 11 to 15. 

The IMD said, "Isolated light/moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) very likely over Telangana, Kerala & Mahe, Interior Karnataka during next 7 days and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh-Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry-Karaikal during April 12-15, 2024." 

On Friday, reports indicated that rain showers drenched various areas of Thiruvananthapuram city offering a reprieve to residents from the relentless heat.

In Kerala, Mavelikkara received the highest rainfall with 9 cm followed by Kumarakom with 6 cm, Kurudamannil with 5 cm, Kottayam and Karumadi with 4 cm each on Friday.

In Tamil Nadu, Kumbakonam, Madurai among other places received mild showers. Previously, the Regional Meteorological Centre predicted the possibility of moderate rain in 13 districts of Tamil Nadu including Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi.

According to RMC in Chennai, the rainfall is due to "Yesterday’s trough/wind discontinuity from cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan to northern parts of Coastal Karnataka now runs from cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood to Coastal Karnataka across Gujarat & Konkan at 0.9 km above mean sea level."

The IMD said that light to moderate rainfall at a few places with thunderstorms and lightning would be experienced at one or two places over south Tamil Nadu. 

In Chennai, Sky condition is likely to be partly cloud with maximum temperature likely to be 35°C and minimum temperature likely to be 26-27°C, as per IMD.
