The passengers took an autorickshaw from Chandapura to go to Yesvantpur. The accused, SR Ashwath, agreed to take them to their destination for ₹100. According to the Hindustan Times, the Inspector of Subramanya Nagar said, “Once in the auto, the driver, midway, started demanding ₹1,500 per head, which is is ₹3,000 in total... the brothers refused to pay the amount, which led to heated arguments between the three."

Soon after, the argument got escalated following which Ashwath punched the first passenger in the abdomen, chest and face repeatedly. Police who were patrolling in the area spotted the victims and took them to a hospital where one of them was declared dead, reported Hindustan Times.
