'Should've Never Listened To Rahul Dravid': Muralitharan Reveals Sehwag's Confession After Missing 300

Virender Sehwag had missed out on scoring a third triple century of his career against Sri Lanka in 2009 by just 7 runs.

New Delhi: Indian cricket team's former star opener Virender Sehwag was known for his fiery batting style. The hard-hitting opening batsman played some exceptional explosive innings in his cricketing career. The right-handed batsman has scored two triple centuries in his Test career.

Sehwag had missed out on scoring a third triple century of his career against Sri Lanka in 2009 by just 7 runs. Regarding this Test match, one of the world's greatest spinners, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan recalled that Test match and that brilliant innings of Sehwag and revealed that Viru told him that he 'should not have listened to Rahul Dravid's suggestion regarding his triple century'.

“I remember he was batting on 290 against us in Mumbai and I think it was Dravid who told him to hang on as he can get to his 300 the next day. The next morning, he tried to tap it but got out caught and bowled and told me ‘I should have never listened to Rahul and instead gone after you’,” Murali told ESPNCricinfo.

This incident is from the third test played between India and Sri Lanka in 2009. Sri Lanka were all out for 393 runs in their first innings. At the end of the second day's play, Sehwag returned unbeaten after scoring 283 runs.  It was expected that Sehwag would soon complete his third triple century on the third day, but he was dismissed for 293 while trying to take a single off Muralitharan's delivery.

Sehwag completed his maiden Test triple century in 2004 against Pakistan at the Multan ground by hitting a six off Saqlain Mushtaq. The star batsman has scored 8586 runs at an average of 49.34 in his Test career of 104 Test matches.
