Zimbabwe's Clive Madande Breaks 147-Year-Old Cricket Record

In the Test match against Ireland, Zimbabwe keeper Clive Madande set an unwanted record by conceding 42 byes in a single innings.

Zimbabwe's wicketkeeper Clive Madande set an unfortunate record on his debut in the ongoing one-off Test match between Ireland and Zimbabwe at the Stormont Cricket Ground in Belfast.

Madande surpassed a 90-year-old record previously held by English cricketer Les Ames, who set this "unwanted record" in 1934. This new record, attained during his first and only Test match between Zimbabwe and Ireland, highlights a notable but regrettable milestone in cricket history.

In the Test match against Ireland, Zimbabwe keeper Clive Madande set an unwanted record by conceding 42 byes in a single innings.

24-year-old Clive Madande was dismissed for a duck in his debut innings. Ireland, responding to Zimbabwe's 210 runs, scored 250 runs in their first innings, taking a 40-run lead. A significant portion of Ireland's total, 42 runs, came through byes conceded by Madande behind the stumps.

For the first time in 147-year cricket history a wicketkeeper conceded over 40 byes in a Test match.

Before Clive Madande, the record for the most byes conceded in a Test innings was held by England wicketkeeper Les Ames. In a 1934 Test match against Australia at The Oval, Ames gave away 37 byes out of 327 runs.

Clive Madande made his ODI debut in 2022 and has played a total of 15 matches for Zimbabwe, scoring 231 runs at a strike rate of 74. His highest individual score in ODIs is 74, and he has achieved two half-centuries. In T20 cricket, Madande has played 30 international matches, accumulating 318 runs at a strike rate of 104. His highest individual score in T20s is an unbeaten 44.
