Who Is Devajit Saikia? The New BCCI Secretary Replacing Jay Shah

Jay Shah vacated the BCCI Secretary post upon assuming the role of ICC Chairman.

After Jay Shah's appointment as ICC Chairman on December 1, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) filled the vacant Secretary position by appointing Devajit Saikia during a special meeting. Also, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has been named the new Treasurer, succeeding Ashish Shelar.

Jay Shah vacated the BCCI Secretary post upon assuming the role of ICC Chairman. Initially, BCCI President Roger Binny appointed Devajit Saikia as interim Secretary using constitutional authority.

However, Saikia has now been officially confirmed as the permanent Secretary. Prabhtej Singh Bhatia replaced Ashish Shelar as Treasurer after Shelar took up a Cabinet Minister role in the Maharashtra Government. Notably, Shelar had already completed two terms as Treasurer.

In line with BCCI regulations, any vacant post must be filled within 45 days, and these appointments adhere to the timeline.

Devajit Saikia's first major task as Secretary was participating in a review meeting of Team India with BCCI President Roger Binny. The meeting, lasting about two hours, included head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The discussion primarily revolved around India's recent performance in Test cricket.

Who is Devajit Saikia?

Devajit Saikia, a former cricketer from Assam, has represented his state in four first-class matches as a wicketkeeper during the 1990-91 season. In his brief career, he scored 53 runs and recorded nine dismissals behind the stumps. Saikia's blend of cricketing experience and administrative skills positions him to take on this significant role in Indian cricket.

"The Two (02) Elective Posts of the Office Bearers - Secretary and Treasurer were Uncontested, and it was not necessary to conduct a Poll in respect of these Two (02) Posts," stated electoral officer A K Joti in his declaration of results, PTI reported.
