England's White-Ball Coach Matthew Mott Steps Down After England Fail To Defend T20 World Cup Title

Matthew Mott, has resigned from his role effective immediately. He coached England to the T20 World Cup 2022 victory but team's performance in the subsequent World Cups under him was poor.

England's head coach for white-ball cricket, Matthew Mott, has resigned from his role effective immediately. Mott led England to victory in the T20 World Cup 2022, held in Australia but England’s performance in the subsequent World Cups under him was poor. England were out of the ODI World Cup 2023 without entering the knockout stage and then failed to defend the T20 World Cup title 2024 as they faced a defeat at the hands of Rohit Sharma-led India in the semifinals.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has started its search for a replacement but the former England player Marcus Trescothick will step into the role as an interim coach for the rest of the summer, with white ball matches against Australia to come in September

Mott was appointed as England's white-ball head coach in May 2022 and achieved immediate success, leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia under Jos Buttler's captaincy. Jos Buttler, who took over as England’s white-ball captain a month after Mott’s appointment following Eoin Morgan's retirement, will continue in his role.

Rob Key Thanks Mott For His Contributions To England Cricket

Rob Key, ECB’s Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, thanked Matthew Mott for his contributions, noting his success in winning a Men’s World Cup with England. Key stated that, after three World Cup cycles, it’s time for a new direction to prepare for future challenges, including the Champions Trophy and upcoming white-ball competitions.

"On behalf of everyone connected to England cricket and me personally, I would like to thank Matthew for all he has done for the team since his appointment. He can be proud of his achievements as he leaves his post as one of only three coaches who have won a Men’s World Cup with England. After three World Cup cycles in a short space of time, I now feel the team needs a new direction to prepare for the challenges ahead. With our focus shifting towards the Champions Trophy early next year and the next cycle of white-ball competition, it is crucial that we ensure the team is focused and prepared,” read a part of the statement by Rob Key.

Mott Expresses Pride In His Journey As England Coach

Matthew Mott expressed pride in his role as England Men’s coach, highlighting the team's character and their T20 World Cup victory in 2022. He thanked players, management, the ECB, and fans for their support and hard work, and valued the friendships and memories made during his tenure.

“I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honour. We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022. I would like to thank the players, management, and everyone at the ECB for their commitment, support, and hard work during my time. I leave with many great friendships and incredible memories. Finally, I would like to thank the England fans, who have always backed us and given us fantastic support wherever we have travelled around the world,” said Mathew Mott.
