IND vs ENG: Sai Sudarshan Gets Out On Zero - But In A Way No One Ever Has

Batting at No. 3, Sai Sudarshan walked in after KL Rahul’s dismissal but lasted only four deliveries before falling to the English pace attack.

Sai Sudarshan, India’s rising star and Orange Cap winner from IPL 2025, made his much-awaited Test debut in the opening match of the five-Test series against England at Headingley. However, what could have been a dream start turned into a forgettable outing, as he was dismissed for a duck in his very first innings.

Out Without Scoring - A Debut to Forget

Batting at No. 3, Sudarshan walked in after KL Rahul’s dismissal but lasted only four deliveries before falling to the English pace attack. He became India’s 317th Test cricketer but couldn't make an impact, joining an unfortunate list of players dismissed for zero in their debut Test innings.

First Indian No. 3 to Register a Duck on Test Debut

With this, Sudarshan became the first Indian batter to be dismissed for zero while batting at No. 3 in a debut Test innings. It's a rare occurrence and the first of its kind in Indian Test history.

He is also only the third Indian player to get out on zero while batting in the top three on debut, after Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Devang Gandhi, both of whom opened the innings.

Part of an Unwanted Club

Sudarshan now joins a list of 29 Indian cricketers who have been dismissed for a duck in their first Test innings. Notably, this list includes big names like G.R. Vishwanath, Parthiv Patel, Wriddhiman Saha, and Ravichandran Ashwin — players who later became mainstays of Indian cricket.
