Shubman Gill Breaks Sunil Gavaskar’s 54-Year-Old Test Record

Gill, who scored a mammoth 269 runs in the first innings, followed it up with another dominant knock and is unbeaten on 143 in the second innings.

Captain Shubman Gill is enjoying a dream run on India’s tour of England. After smashing a century in the Leeds Test, he has taken his form a notch higher at Edgbaston, delivering one of the greatest individual performances in Indian Test history.

Gill, who scored a mammoth 269 runs in the first innings, followed it up with another dominant knock and is unbeaten on 143 in the second innings. With this, he has created history — breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s 54-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian in a single Test match.

Most Runs in a Single Test by an Indian Batter (Combined Innings)

Shubman Gill: 412* runs, vs England, 2025

Sunil Gavaskar: 344 runs, vs West Indies, 1971

VVS Laxman: 340 runs, vs Australia, 2001

Sourav Ganguly: 330 runs, vs Pakistan, 2007

Virender Sehwag: 319 runs, vs South Africa, 2008

*Note: Gill is still unbeaten and the tally could rise.

Record-Breaking First Innings

In the first innings, Shubman Gill led from the front, crafting a stunning 269 off 387 balls, laced with 30 boundaries and 3 sixes. It is now India’s highest individual score by a captain in Test cricket and also the best by an Indian in England.

With this kind of form and maturity at the crease, Shubman Gill is not only filling big shoes but carving a legacy of his own. As the Edgbaston Test progresses, all eyes remain on him to see how far he can push this phenomenal milestone.

Gill-Jadeja Duo Batters England as Records Tumble

Team India is firmly in control of the second Test at Edgbaston, thanks to a dominant partnership between Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja. The duo has put on a scintillating show with the bat, extending India’s lead to over 560 runs against England.

Gill, who is nearing the 150-run mark in the second innings, is rewriting the record books. He has now surpassed Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored by an Indian in a debut Test series as captain.

At the other end, Jadeja is providing solid support with a well-compiled half-century, further frustrating the English bowlers and tightening India’s grip on the match.
