IND vs ENG 1st Test: England Clinch 5-Wicket Win Over India In Leeds Test

The final day began with England needing 350 runs and all 10 wickets in hand.

England pulled off a memorable victory at Headingley, defeating India by 5 wickets in the first Test of the series.

Chasing a daunting target of 371, the hosts displayed remarkable grit and composure to overhaul the total with 373/5 on the board in 82 overs, sealing the match late on Day 5.

England take 1-0 lead

India had posted imposing scores of 471 in the first innings and 364 in the second, thanks to centuries from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. However, England’s response was equally strong. They managed 465 in their first innings, led by contributions from Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root.

The final day began with England needing 350 runs and all 10 wickets in hand. Duckett and Crawley provided a dream start, putting on a 188-run opening stand. Duckett went on to score a fluent century, setting the tone for the chase.

India fought back in the middle session with wickets from Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur, including a dramatic double-strike from Thakur that saw Ben Duckett and Harry Brook fall in quick succession. However, England’s seasoned pair of Joe Root and Ben Stokes steadied the ship, steering the team closer to the target with a calm, calculated approach.

England crosses the line with confidence

Root remained unbeaten as England crossed the line with confidence, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The win is particularly significant as it came on a pitch that offered some late turn and reverse swing, testing both teams' skills and temperament.

India will rue missed chances and an ineffective bowling display outside of Jasprit Bumrah’s heroics. England, on the other hand, will take great confidence from their ability to chase down a big total under pressure.
