The Old Super Six Format Returns, Look At Changed ICC Cricket World Cup Rules

It is a format that was used in the 2003 Cricket World Cup that was dominated by India. In all, 14 teams participate in the main tournament. Know more below.

London: ICC has come up with a changed set of rules for the Cricket World Cup. The World Cup of 2027 will be played under the 'Super-Six' format. ICC had adopted the IPL-like round-robin format in the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

It is learned that England was not in favor of having only 10 teams in the cricket World Cup and thus, from the 2027 edition, 14 teams will participate in the tournament. This was reported by Telegraph UK.

What is the Super Six format?

It is a format that was used in the 2003 Cricket World Cup that was dominated by India. In all, 14 teams participate in the main tournament. These 4 teams are then divided in two groups of seven. The top 3 teams from both pools advance to the Super Six round, the teams winning the most matches in the first round have an advantage in the Super Six round as their points for winning the most matches are counted in the next round as well.

In the Super 6, one team plays against the other five and the Top 4 qualify for the semi-finals.

What is the Round-Robin format?

A round-robin format is like the one which is used in the IPL where one team plays against all the participating teams and the top-4 qualify for Semi-final after that.

This type of format had room for 10 teams only and the ECB was against the decision of playing 10 teams in the World Cup.

India had a stellar Super-Six in the 2003 Cricket World Cup when they lost to Australia in the final. This type of format makes sure that the teams that consistently perform well get to go ahead.
