How Is Shitala Shashti Celebrated? Learn About Odisha’s Special Tradition

In Sambalpur, Odisha, Shitala Shashti is celebrated as a five-day festival called the 'Sital Shashti Yatra.' The festivities begin with the ritual called 'Patra Pedi,' where a local family is regarded as the maternal home of Goddess Parvati.

Over the next two days, a symbolic farewell to Goddess Parvati is held, and a wedding procession is taken to the marriage venue. In Lord Shiva’s procession, Hanuman and Lord Narasimha lead the way. The day after the wedding, a grand procession called the 'Nagar Parikrama' or 'Sital Shashti Yatra' takes place, where people dance, sing, and celebrate with drums and music, enjoying the vibrant festival atmosphere.

Mythological Significance: Why Is Shitala Shashti Celebrated?

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati, an incarnation of Devi Sati, performed intense penance to marry Lord Shiva. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva accepted her as his consort on the sixth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha.

This divine union is commemorated through the celebration of Shitala Shashti. Additionally, the day also marks the birth of Lord Kartikeya, who later slew the demon Tarakasura and restored peace in the universe, adding to the day’s spiritual significance.
