Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2024: Know Date, Significance, Rituals, And All About This Day

Vaikunth Chaturdashi falls a day before Kartik Purnima, marking the only day when both Hari (Vishnu) and Har (Shiva) are worshiped together.

Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2024: Vaikuntha Chaturdashi is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the waxing phase of Kartik month which is a sacred day dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Lord of Vaikuntha (heaven), and Lord Shiva. According to Hindu beliefs, worshiping both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva on this day opens the gateway to Vaikuntha, or heaven, for the devotee. Those who observe rituals on Vaikuntha Chaturdashi are believed to attain a place in Vaikuntha at the end of their life, thus freeing them from the cycle of rebirth.

The Unique Dual Worship Of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi:

Vaikuntha Chaturdashi is the only day in the Hindu calendar when Lord Vishnu is offered Bilva leaves (traditionally associated with Shiva), and Lord Shiva is adorned with Tulsi leaves (traditionally associated with Vishnu). This rare and unique worship symbolises the unity of Vishnu and Shiva. In 2024, Vaikuntha Chaturdashi falls on November 14, just a day before Kartik Purnima. This day is especially significant, as it is one of the few occasions when both deities are jointly worshiped.

Vaikuntha Chaturdashi Significance:

The primary rituals of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi are observed at night, specifically during the Nishita Kala, or midnight, according to the Hindu calendar. Devotees traditionally chant the Vishnu Sahasranama, reciting the thousand names of Lord Vishnu while offering him a thousand lotus flowers. This symbolic offering represents deep devotion and invokes divine blessings.

Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2024 Muhurat:

In 2024, the Chaturdashi tithi of the Kartik Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) begins on November 14 at 9:43 a.m. and will conclude the next day, November 15, at 6:19 a.m. The auspicious time for the Nishita Kala rituals is between 11:39 p.m. on November 14 and 12:32 a.m. on November 15.

Rituals Of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi:

On Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, devotees start the day with a ritual bath and keep a fast. In the evening, they worship Lord Vishnu with lotus flowers, and offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Shiva, observing a rare ritual that symbolises unity between the two deities. During the puja, devotees chant this mantra for blessings:

“Vina yo haripujaam tu kuryad rudrasya charchanam,
Vritha tasya bhavetpuja satyametadavacho mama.”

According to ancient texts, acts of charity, chanting, and other devotions performed on Vaikuntha Chaturdashi are equivalent in merit to the performance of ten yajnas (sacrificial offerings).
