The festival of Makar Sankranti is based on the Sun's transit into Capricorn, Saturn's zodiac sign. This year, the Sun will enter Capricorn on January 14, 2025, at 9:03 AM, making it the day to celebrate Makar Sankranti.

In recent years, this festival was occasionally celebrated on January 15, but after three years, it will once again be observed on January 14. The last time this occurred was in 2021.

The Significance Of Sun Worship On Makar Sankranti

Life on Earth exists because of the Sun. Among the five principal deities, the Sun is the only one directly present on Earth. It is due to the Sun that we receive food, water, and life-sustaining air. Hence, on Makar Sankranti, worshipping the Sun is a way of expressing gratitude. Praying to the Sun God is believed to enhance honour and respect, eliminate illnesses and negativity, and improve relationships with one’s father, fostering harmony and sweetness.

The Rituals Of Sun Worship On Makar Sankranti

  • On Makar Sankranti, wake up early during Brahma Muhurat and take a bath, mixing Gangajal in the water.
  • After bathing, wear clean or new clothes and meditate on the Sun God. Chant the 'Surya Namostu' mantra 21 times.
  • Now, fill a copper vessel with water, roli, kumkum, and flowers. While facing the Sun, offer the water and chant the 12 names of the Sun God.
  • On Makar Sankranti, it is considered auspicious to worship Lord Narayan with sesame seeds. There is also a tradition of eating khichdi and sesame laddus on this day for good fortune.
  • On Makar Sankranti, it is considered beneficial to recite the Shri Narayan Kavach, Aditya Hriday Stotra, and Vishnu Sahasranama as part of the puja rituals for spiritual well-being and blessings.
