Kharmas 2024: Know The Exact Date When Auspicious Work Will Pause

Kharmas lasts for a month, during which all auspicious activities come to halt. Lord Vishnu is considered the presiding deity of this period, and special significance is given to prayers and rituals.

Kharmas 2024: In Sanatan Dharma, Kharmas holds great significance. During this period, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Surya Dev (Sun God) to bring prosperity and happiness into their lives. However, Kharmas is considered inauspicious for performing any new or ceremonial activities, as they are believed to yield unfavorable results.

This year, let’s explore when Kharmas begins and which activities should be avoided during this period.

Kharmas 2024 Date:

Kharmas will begin on December 15, 2024, coinciding with Dhanu Sankranti, and will end on January 14, 2024, with the arrival of Makar Sankranti. According to astrology, Kharmas begins when the Sun transitions into the zodiac sign of Sagittarius (Dhanu) or Pisces (Meen).

During this period, as per ancient scriptures, all auspicious activities are paused. Instead, the focus shifts to spiritual practices such as chanting mantras, penance, and making charitable donations.

What Not to Do During Kharmas:

Kharmas, also known as Dhanu Maas, prohibits the performance of 16 Sanskaras and other auspicious activities. The following practices are to be avoided:

  • Marriage ceremonies, naming rituals, first-feeding ceremonies (Annaprashan), and education initiations should not be conducted.
  • Beginning new ventures, including construction of homes, is considered inauspicious.
  • Consuming tamasic food (non-vegetarian or heavy foods) is discouraged.
  • Astrological texts mention that when the Sun transits into Sagittarius or Pisces—both ruled by Jupiter (Guru)—the planet’s energies are diminished. Since Jupiter governs luck and prosperity, weakened planetary energies are believed to hinder success in auspicious endeavors.

What Should Be Done During Kharmas?

While auspicious activities are paused, the period is ideal for engaging in spiritual practices and acts of kindness:

  • Worship Lord Vishnu and Surya Dev with devotion.
  • Visit temples and offer food and money to the needy.
  • Chant mantras and perform rituals during daily prayers.
  • Offer Arghya (water) to the Sun God during sunrise to seek blessings.
