Dhoomavati Jayanti Today, Know Why Married Women Avoid Her Puja

Dhoomavati Jayanti 2025: Goddess Dhoomavati is the seventh of the 10 Mahavidyas and a form of Parvati, yet married women do not worship her. Here's the reason behind this tradition.

Dhoomavati Jayanti 2025: According to the Hindu Panchang, Dhoomavati Jayanti is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Jyeshtha month, which falls on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. This day marks the appearance of Goddess Dhoomavati, a fierce form of the Divine Mother believed to remove negativity and defeat enemies. However, married women traditionally avoid worshipping her.

The Fierce and Widow Form Of Goddess Dhoomavati

Goddess Dhoomavati is depicted as a widow with a fierce and fearsome appearance, symbolising detachment and spiritual transformation. Scriptures describe her as the sister of Goddess Lakshmi, also known as Alakshmi — a goddess associated with misfortune. It is believed that her gaze can reduce marital happiness and prosperity, which is why married women do not worship her.

Mythological Origin Of Dhoomavati

According to legend, Goddess Parvati, in a moment of extreme hunger, assumed a terrifying form and even swallowed Lord Shiva, becoming a widow. This fierce form of Parvati is identified as Goddess Dhoomavati. Due to this connection with widowhood, married women refrain from her worship, although this transformation is considered part of Shiva’s divine play.

Who Should Worship Goddess Dhoomavati?

While Suhaagin women traditionally avoid worshipping Goddess Dhoomavati due to her association with widowhood and inauspiciousness, her devotees include widows, ascetics, spiritual seekers, and Tantrik practitioners. These individuals are often on a path of renunciation, detachment, or deeper spiritual awakening—qualities closely aligned with Dhoomavati’s essence.

Her worship is particularly prevalent in the Tantrik tradition, where she is seen not as inauspicious but as a powerful force that helps transcend worldly illusions and destroy internal enemies like ego, ignorance, and fear. Sadhaks and Yogis invoke her to eliminate negative energies, obstacles, and harmful influences from their spiritual path.

In this context, Goddess Dhoomavati is not feared but revered—as a goddess who reveals harsh truths, grants inner strength, sharpens intellect, and guides the seeker toward moksha. Her worship is typically performed in solitude or in sacred Tantrik rituals, often with specific mantras and offerings aligned with her fierce energy.
